Who is Metasploit Framework for?

If you’re running or responsible for any type of IT system that hackers or cyber criminals may want to break into, deface, or bring down for business or pleasure, Metasploit Framework is for you. The tool enables you to carry out penetration tests (often called “pentests”) on your own systems. This means you’re attacking your own systems in the same way a hacker would to identify security holes. Of course, you do this without actually harming the network.

What’s your role?

Penetration tester
Test if your organization’s IT infrastructure can withstand an attack, either from a stranger or an insider.

Security consultant
Conduct penetration tests against your clients’ IT systems and expose any security threats to their data or infrastructure.

IT security and network administrator
Test your own network against the Metasploit Project’s extensive database of exploits. Find how out how secure your IT infrastructure
truly is.

Quality assurance engineer
Identify exploitable vulnerabilities in your application, especially in third-party components.

IDS/IPS developer
Understand how the Metasploit Framework works and leverage that understanding to help create reliable signatures for intrusion detection system (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS).

Students
Learn how hackers can attack your systems and learn how to design IT infrastructures that are immune to attacks. Read the Metasploit source code to learn how exploits work.

Do I need to buy a commercial Metasploit Edition if I’m using Metasploit Framework at work?

The Metasploit Framework is free to use for both private and commercial use, so you don’t have to buy a license. However, if you are regularly doing penetration tests, you may benefit from our commercial Metasploit editions Metasploit Express and Metasploit Pro.

  • Metasploit Pro is for the seasoned penetration tester who wants to complete assignments more efficiently and wants to draw from a broader arsenal of advanced attack capabilities.
  • Metasploit Express was designed for the busy network security professional who needs to verify the exploitability of vulnerabilities to prioritize threats and speed up the remediation process.
